UN Human Rights Office releases assessment of human rights concerns in Xinjiang, China.

UN Human Rights Office announces that serious human rights violations are being committed by the Chinese government against Uyghurs and other ethnic groups.

GENEVA - On 31 August 2022, the UN Human Rights Office published an assessment of human rights concerns in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

It noted that serious human rights violations against Uyghurs and others are being committed by the Chinese government in the name of countering terrorism and extremism.

This assessment was initiated following serious allegations of human rights violations against Uyghurs and other Muslim-majority communities that have come to the attention of the UN Human Rights Office and the UN Human Rights Mechanism since late 2017, particularly in relation to the Chinese Government's policies and measures to combat terrorism and 'extremism'.
